introduction
Gladius Aquilae & HEMA
Gladius Aquilae is the HEMA section of Kotkan Miekkailuseura, and has been active since February 2025. Our instructor is the section’s founder, Valtteri Kauppi.
What is HEMA?
Historical European Fencing, or HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) is a contact sport where we study sword fighting based on historical European sources ranging from the 14th century all the way to the 19th century.
We use modern protective gear and blunt steel swords designed to be flexible upon thrusting for safety reasons.

Kunst des Fechtens
The Art of Fencing
Our primary focus is on the longsword, following the traditions of the Liechtenauer lineage. Johannes Liechtenauer was a 14th-century German fencing master whose teachings were recorded in writing from the 15th century onward.
We also occasionally train with the 18th-century smallsword according to the teachings of Domenico Angelo, as well as other weapons such as the sabre and messer.
Where and when?
We normally train at Saaripirtti in Mussalo, Kotka, on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Fridays: 18:00 – 21:00
Wednesdays: 19:30 – 21:00
Joining
We don’t have a beginner’s course for historical fencing. You can join us at any time!
What do I need to bring?
For your first few practices, all you need are regular workout clothes, indoor sports shoes, and a water bottle. You don’t need your own fencing gear, as you can start out using the club’s loaner equipment.
How much does it cost?
The first two practices are free, after which you can choose to join the club as a member. The membership fee consists of two parts and currently totals €35/year.
